The Environmental Protection Agency said Friday it would delay issuing final regulations aimed at cutting pollution from factory boilers until April 2012, amid pressure from industry groups and lawmakers.

The EPA decision came just days after a top EPA official publicly touted the health and economic benefits of a separate but similar rule to control mercury emissions from aging coal-fired power plants.

The EPA faces increasing pressure from Congress and business groups to slow down a broad regulatory agenda, including proposals to curb carbon dioxide emissions using the Clean Air Act and several rules aimed at clamping down on emissions from coal-burning power plants.

The boiler rules were the target of a House bill introduced by four Republicans and four Democrats Wednesday that would give the agency 15 months to finalize the boiler rules and allow factories at least five years to comply.

…EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson has said stronger controls on emissions of toxic substances such as mercury from boilers would yield a significant improvement to public health.

Racism in Ann Arbor? MTV captures black teacher demolishing aspiring white female rapping girl

Was it all just a misunderstanding and the girl took it too hard?


The teacher asks: "How do you respond to people that understand the roots of rap and they say to you 'you disrespecting the culture?", followed by some arguments about feminism not being the same for white women and black women, followed by the kids in the class echoing similar racial tones.

Here's what I understood: This teacher is saying "rapping is for blacks only, and whites doing it are disrespecting and they shouldn't". Using the "some people might say" phrase to express her own opinion. To which I reply, some people may say that this teacher is caught up in her own reverse racism, taking offense to anything white people do which comes near her own "blacks only culture boundaries". The girl explicitly says she doesn't want to be in this race discussion, and the class and teacher kept pulling her into it. Now knowing this is going on national television, who the heck would want to take the chance of being painted through editing as being a white racist for the crime of being white and rapping?!

The next clip shows exactly that, she doesn't want to move forward, she wants to quit and quit now before it's too late and she becomes a national discussion, which by the end of this week, this poor girl just might be.

Finally, I didn't watch the episode, but people who have watched it and commented on annarbor.com say there's more to it and bad turns into worse. The student was brought to tears, there was an environment of bullying, when all the poor girl wanted to do was share her experience of being bullied. OH, THE IRONY!

Pioneer High School student confronts racial issues while learning to be a rapper on MTV's 'Made'

Pioneer High School student Emma Hamstra went on MTV’s show Made to learn how to become a rapper, but the reality show also documents what the teen calls an attack by students and a teacher during a discussion that turned to race.

The episode will air at 4 p.m. today.

The show follows Hamstra - a college-bound field hockey player, poet and feminist - as she becomes a rapper performing her own song on a stage in front of a crowd of about 2,000 people.

A clip from the episode posted on MTV’s website shows Hamstra, 17, speaking to teacher Vicki Shields’ African American humanities class at Pioneer about wanting to become a rapper and being confronted by the teacher and students.

She'd been invited to the class by Shields to discuss why Hamstra - a white teen - wanted to rap.

In a promotional clip for the show, Shields tells Emma Hamstra she can’t understand the issues of African Americans.

Hamstra said the discussion escalated into a conversation about the role of race in rapping and whether Hamstra had a right to express herself through it. She's also wondering how the entire experience will be portrayed on the show.

“I felt like there was a mob mentality in the classroom,” Hamstra said. “Everyone in the class wanted to rally behind Vicki and it was definitely really uncomfortable.

"The camera woman stopped filming and stopped the conversation because she was so upset.

TSA head: Airport screeners must avoid pat-downs of children (CNN)

The Transportation Security Administration is changing its policy on how screeners can search children, the agency's head has said.

TSA Administrator John Pistole announced the change at a Wednesday meeting of the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee.

The change was prompted by outrage over a video-recorded pat-down of a 6-year-old airline passenger at the New Orleans airport on April 5. The video, which was posted on YouTube, shows the girl protesting at first to the search, although she complies quietly while it is under way.

Pistole explained to committee members that a female security screener performed a pat-down search on the 6-year-old girl because the child had moved while passing through an airport body imaging machine. That prevented the device from getting a clear reading that the child was not carrying any banned objects through airport security.

"We have changed the policy to say that there'll be repeated efforts made to resolve that without a pat-down," Pistole told committee members.

The new policy will apply to children 10 years old or younger, Pistole said.

The incident renewed debate over the the TSA's security practices, especially their use on such low-risk passengers as young children. A backlash against passenger pat-downs -- an alternative to full-body scans in some locations -- swelled during the holiday travel season last year. Pistole maintained at the time that the agency walks a fine line between privacy concerns and public safety.

However, during the committee meeting, U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, grilled Pistole for erring thoughtlessly too far on the side of safety.

"This isn't to say we don't believe in safety procedures," Paul said. "But I think I feel less safe when we're doing these invasive exams on a 6-year-old. It makes me think that you're clueless, that you think she's going to attack our country, and that you're not doing your research on the people who would attack our country."

Pistole suggested a pat-down of a child is not entirely unjustified.

"Unfortunately, we know that terrorists around the world have used children as suicide bombers," Pistole replied.

So the kids will absorb more radiation while ordered by TSA agents to STAND STILL GOSH DARN IT! And if they fail to obey, it'll be repeated. That's somewhat an improvement. Somewhat. The only reason we are going through airport molestation is because of The crotch bomber. One person, which fits the classic terrorists profile. We can all assume 5 year olds traveling with parents whom were screened and possibly molested by TSA - is not wearing an explosive diaper. Oh well, why make any sense with this administration? As long as Hamas offshoot CAIR is happy we equally disturb lives of normal people as we do to potential terrorists.

A better solution is to place trained human verbal screeners and providing proper legislation to avoid ACLU "racial profiling" law suits.

Obama to give speech on Afghanistan troop withdrawal this week

President Barack Obama will give a speech on the Afghanistan troop drawdown on Wednesday, a senior administration official said Monday.

The news came hours after White House Press Secretary Jay Carney told reporters that Obama had yet to make a final decision on the size and scope of the troop withdrawal, but would do so "soon."

"The president is still in a process of finalizing his decision on the pace and scope of the drawdown that will begin in July of 2011," Carney said Monday afternoon. "He's finalizing his decision. He's reviewing the options and the assessments and will have an announcement to make soon."

An estimated 100,000 U.S. troops are serving in Afghanistan, some 30,000 of which are part of the so-called surge ordered in late 2009 in a bid to control the rising violence.

I watched about a minute of CNN slice and dice of jokes, I thought it started promising and then was followed by mostly used up, so-so, jokes.

America's liberal media are having a field day claiming that an Obama impersonator at a Republican event was pulled off the stage Saturday for telling racial and gay jokes.

Here's how the Washington Post reported it (video of entire presentation also follows with commentary):

A President Obama impersonator was pulled off the stage Saturday at the Republican Leadership Conference, after telling a string of racially themed jokes about the president.

The impersonator, Reggie Brown, took the stage at the annual presidential cattle call to the Bruce Springsteen song “Born in the USA” — an apparent allusion to the birther controversy. He proceeded to tell a series of off-color jokes poking fun at Obama’s biracial heritage and a gay member of Congress.

Politico framed it the same way:

A comedian impersonating President Obama made racially tinged jokes Saturday at the Republican Leadership Conference before being pulled off the stage by an event organizer.

I've watched the entire eighteen minutes, and in my view, the jokes Brown made were pretty tame especially if compared to what late night comedians say about Republicans on almost a daily basis.

Brown's jokes weren't nearly as caustic as some of the stuff Wanda Sykes said at last year's White House Correspondents' Dinner.

Here are some of the lines the Post found potentially offensive:

• On Black History Month: “Michelle celebrates the full month. I celebrate half.”

• “My mother loved a black man,” but “she was not a Kardashian.”

• A picture was shown of Obama and the first lady when he took office. The impersonator then showed a picture of what the Obamas will look like when the president leaves office, and it was the characters of Fred Sanford and his sister-in-law, Ethel, from the show “Sanford and Son.”

Are those that bad? The Post also took issue with this:

• Of Tim Pawlenty’s decision not to criticize Mitt Romney at Monday’s debate: “[CNN’s] John King served him up a ball softer than Barney Frank’s backside.” (Frank is a gay member of Congress from Massachusetts.)

A top White House spokesman faced tough questions at a conference of liberal bloggers and activists who have expressed disappointment with President Barack Obama's first term.

White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer acknowledged "frustration with some of the decisions" by the White House. He said activists at the Netroots Nation conference were critical to Obama's election in 2008.

In an interview on stage with the Daily Kos website, Pfeiffer was pressed on the Obama administration's economic policies, implementation of the law repealing the ban on openly gay service members, and Obama's decision to extend tax cuts advanced by President George W. Bush.

Suspect in Custody After Suspicious Package Found Near Pentagon

Authorities say they have a suspect in custody after finding a backpack which may contain an explosive chemical near the Pentagon in Arlington, Va.

A source with knowledge of the investigation told Fox News that authorities were alerted to a suspicious vehicle in the area early Friday morning. A backpack containing what they believe is five pounds of ammonium nitrate was found outside the vehicle, the source said, though authorities are still trying to determine what the material is.

A notebook was also found at the scene and contained threatening words like "Al Qaeda" and "Taliban," Fox News has learned.

The man arrested is a naturalized U.S. citizen who came to the country from Ethiopia, a source told MyFoxDC.com.

David Scholosser of the U.S. Park Police said during a press conference Friday that a man, whom he did not identify, was found inside Arlington Cemetery overnight when the cemetery was closed. The man was taken into custody and "was not very cooperative to answers about what his activities were," Scholosser said.

Scholosser said authorities then searched for the man's vehicle, which was found in close proximity to the Pentagon. He did not confirm reports that suspicious items have been found, saying the investigation is still ongoing.

Mitt praised by Al Gore, is Mitt the new McCain?

The least conservative candidate is somehow leading the polls. Me-thinks there's something stinky going on.

1. He's a greeny, a pro environment - there's a global warming let's all panic guy. Not the pro-energy/ drill baby drill most GOP supporters want.

2. Him being the candidate gives Obama a pass on defending his horrendous Obamacare bill. Since Mitt passed a similar bill as governor, he'll be easily rebuffed in the debates closer to election day.

3. I don't understand why, but primary voters are easily convinced to choose the 'electable' candidate - the one the lefty media tells them to. It happened in 2007, it's happening again. It's sad.

Investors Business Daily: Al Warms To Mitt

GOP presidential front-runner Mitt Romney has a new, not-so-welcome friend: Al Gore, who extolled the candidate's promise to fight hard against global warming. Does Gore think Romney can't win?

The former vice president, who has devoted his post-electoral career to climate change fanaticism, this week gave the former Massachusetts governor kudos on the issue closest to Gore's heart.

"Good for Mitt Romney," Gore blogged Wednesday afternoon. "While other Republicans are running from the truth, he is sticking to his guns in the face of the anti-science wing of the Republican Party."

At a recent New Hampshire town hall meeting, Romney "stuck to the position he has held for many years — that he believes the world is getting warmer and that humans are contributing to it," said the Washington Post.

A year and a half ago, the Climate-gate scandals showed that "scientists" — actually, government-funded global warming activists — were skewing climate data and trying to silence climate change skeptics.

But Romney's campaign says he can't reconsider global warming because he's already flip-flopped on too much else — including abortion and government-run health care. Democrats such as DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz are having a field day accusing Romney of being a chameleon who has to "debate with himself on where he is on any issue."

Romney also has no economic plan to speak of, and liberal New Republic writer Jonathan Chait blogged Monday it's because doing so would "undercut the political salience of his managerial reputation." In other words, "he'll be running as the advocate of a specific program rather than the guy who will do for America what he did at Bain Capital" as a successful "turnaround artist."

Romney's experience in private equity is not to be discounted; time and again he took broken companies and fixed them. And there's no question Romney would be a far better president than Barack Obama.

Hey Shawarma Mayor, why do you need another blog?!

Hi Everyone,

I started Shawarma Mayor in 2006 in the peak of an ongoing war of terror attacks on Israeli civilians to share my outrage at the world engulfing indifference to what Israeli civilians are going through. It has always been a personal blog by an individual expressing personal opinions and collecting different types of news items. I decided at some point to not blog about partisan American political issues at that blog for the benefit of its cause.

While I was involved at a time with the "weasel zippers" website, I have since moved on. I made several mistakes while posting there and we parted ways.

So here I am, still caring passionately about American politics, still leaning right and abusing the English language...

I promise to do my best whenever I can to post everything I find interesting and ground breaking related to general news items and political activities. I'll cover every available GOP or DNC controversy with my own Israeli born, American conservative leaning perspective.
